Seven weeks before Easter – Forgiveness day /Sirni Zagovezni/

13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Colossians 3:13

The Sunday 7 week before Eastern is Sirni Zagovezni – Forgiveness day. People in Bulgaria keep the tradition to ask forgiveness to the older family members:
The words that we say to our parents is “Forgive me” and the answer is “You are forgiven”.

The name of the Holiday “Sirni Zagovezni” comes from two bulgarian words. The firs wors is noun Sirene (cheese) because the traditions is ti have cheese on the  table. The second word comes from the verb Zagoviavam (eat very long and start keeping the Lent). This verb is used for this occasion only.

The date is different every year and depens on Eeastern. This is one of the greatest Christian feasts, to which the Church calls on believers to purify their souls, to fill their hearts with peace and love to meet the risen Christ. Sirni Zagovesi marks the beginning of the Long Lent of the year, days of abstinence and humility.

The tradition

The whole family gathers at the table and the dishes are with cheese and eggs. This is the day when the younger ask forgiveness from the older.

On Wednesday and Fridays young men and women are swinging. Also during the whole week fires are lit, and again for health they leap; then people are playing around and singing songs around them.

Depending on the region, there are different traditions on this day. On that day, the village Gabarevo near Kazanluk becomes the village of Koukers.

The key word in Bulgarian is “Сирни Заговезни”

The date changes

As Eastern, the date of Sirni Zagovezni changes. In 2019 Sirni Zagovezni is on 10th of March.
